Presidential Scholars Weekend | Benedictine College

Presidential Scholars Weekend

Benedictine College awards 15 scholarships to outstanding young men and women who are selected from the annual Presidential Scholars Competition. Ten Presidential Scholarships in the amount of $31,830 and five Dean’s Scholarships of $23,875 are awarded each year.

The Presidential Scholars Weekend, which includes the Scholarship Competition, is a signature campus event that involves our entire college community. We warmly invite students to experience the most complete expression of our hospitality and scholarship by attending in person. This year promises to be a unique enterprise. Social distancing measures and safety protocol will be followed in order to ensure the well-being of every guest. That said, we fully understand if students elect to participate virtually in the competition-only portion of the event. A decision to register for the virtual option provides the same competition odds as the in-person experience.

In-Person Option

Friday and Saturday, February 19-20, 2021

Each weekend will be restricted to 150 student participants as part of our ongoing commitment to COVID-19 mitigation. Students are asked to limit accompanying guests to two people. This two-weekend, limited-capacity approach enhances our plans to provide a safe environment for all participants.

Virtual Option

We understand that not all students and families are comfortable this year with in-person attendance. If you wish to compete virtually, please register for a virtual interview and essay-writing session by February 10, 2021. All virtual sessions will be scheduled within the first two weeks of February.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Submit an official high school transcript showing a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher.
  • Submit an official ACT composite score of 27 or higher, an official SAT score of at least 1260 or an official CLT score of at least 84 or higher. (Due to limited access to standardized tests, Benedictine College has expanded the eligibility criteria for this year’s Presidential Scholarship Competition to include a focus on high school GPA .)

  • Be granted admission as an incoming freshman to Benedictine College for fall 2021.

Weekend Overview

The Competition Weekend consists of a Friday visit day, scholars' dinner, and Saturday competition. Along with the chance to compete for an incredible four-year scholarship, students have these opportunities:

  • Audition with the music department (see requirements) - Friday only
  • Meet outstanding students from all over the country
  • Preview our Academic Departments and meet with faculty members

The Competition

On Saturday students from all over the country will compete for one of these prestigious scholarships through:

  • An on-site essay based on 3-5 prompts
  • A 20-minute interview* with 2 faculty members, administrators, or board members

Attendance on Saturday is mandatory for all competitors, although all participants are encouraged to take advantage of the Friday activities.

*Your resumé will be provided to faculty or staff members prior to your competition interview. It must be kept to one page. Please do not include your GPA, class rank or test scores on this resume.

COVID-19 Notice

We will manage both Scholars Weekend events in a manner consistent with regulations from the state of Kansas and Atchison County.

Please review and abide by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment Travel Guidelines prior to arriving on campus.

Further, we ask visitors to wear protective face coverings while on campus (disposable masks will be available at check-in) and to practice social distancing.
