Club - Sociology & Criminology

The Sociology Club

The Sociology Club was founded in 2011 to provide fellowship, academic and service opportunities for students interested in sociology. The club meets twice a month for lunch and planning. It sponsors at least one academic and one service outreach each year.

Sponsored speakers have included:

  • Benny Hochman, Author and Survivor of the Holocaust Death Camp at Buchenwald
  • Father Robert Obol, Author and Pastor, who spoke about his own experiences of terrorism and pastoral work in Uganda
  • Bill Scholl, Director of Social Justice for the Archdiocese of Kansas City who spoke on Immigration Issues and the USCCB
  • Kristy Childs, Director and Founder of Veronica’s Voice, who spoke on "Prostitution and Trafficking: Understanding of the Dynamics of Oppression"
  • Paul Pearce, Executive Producer of “Rise and Dream” a film about Unbound’s missionary work in the Philippines who premiered the film at BC
  • Sister Miracles of the Little Way, a Franciscan Sister of the Poor of Jesus, who spoke about the Sisters’ Street Ministry to the Homeless in Kansas City and how we can help
  • Deb Campbell, Sociology Alumna and founder of A Couple of Characters, who directed a theatre-therapy performance by women recovering from abuse and severe trauma
  • A Panel of Post-Abortive Women who told their stories about the pain of abortion and their own journeys of recovery
  • A Panel of Refugee Service Providers who recounted stories of their work with refugees from the camps to resettlement
  • Laney Pieper, Sociology Alumna, who spoke to the club about how to market yourself for employment and about her work as a Probation Officer

Service Projects for the Club have included:

  • Service Drive for DOVES, Atchison’s Battered Women’s Shelter
  • Habitat for Humanity work days
  • Tutoring at the Elementary School
  • Party Planning for the Boys’ and Girls’ Club
  • Party Planning and Dance for a local Nursing Home
  • Ringing the Bell for Salvation Army
  • Sponsoring a Family at Christmas
  • Participating in Campus Clean-up
