About the Department of Art & Design

Mission

Recognizing the power of artists and the visual experience to enhance the lives of individuals and communities, the Department of Art & Design seeks to develop students’ aesthetic, conceptual, and technical abilities, in order to prepare them for a successful studio practice, graduate study, or a career in the arts and related fields.  The Department also aims to provide the college and Atchison communities with opportunities to explore the creative aspect of the human spirit.

Goals

The overall objectives of the Department of Art & Design are to:

  • Help students understand the historical and contemporary trends and practices of artists.

  • Develop working artists in the areas of graphic design, painting, drawing, photography, printmaking, sculpture, illustration and ceramics.

  • Prepare students for graduate level study.

  • Prepare students for positions in art related areas such as museum and galleries.

  • Prepare students to teach art in primary and secondary settings.

  • Help the student body, campus community, and Atchison to explore the nature and function of art.
