One-Year Visiting Assistant Professor of Music

The Benedictine College Department of Music is currently accepting applications for a full-time Visiting Professor of Music for the 2021-2022 academic year. The successful candidate will direct our academic bands, plus teach music education courses and applied lessons.

The Department of Music offers the following programs: Bachelor of Music Education, BA in Music, BA in Music with specialization in Composition, and BA in Music with specialization in Liturgical Music. The department consists of four full-time tenure-track faculty and eight adjuncts, and has been designated an All-Steinway School. It has been a member of National Association of Schools of Music since 1946. The department serves around 25 majors and 450 non-majors in our ensembles and general education courses.

The band program has seen significant growth in the past three years, with the establishment of the Athletic Department’s pep band program: Raven Regiment and Drum Corps. There are currently approximately 150 students involved in both Music Department and Athletic Department bands. The successful candidate will be able to articulate how to maintain strong ties between both programs while building musical excellence.

The beautiful campus of Benedictine College is situated in picturesque Atchison, KS on the bluffs above the Missouri River. Atchison is within an hour of major cities such as Kansas City, Saint Joseph, Lawrence and Topeka as well as 35 minutes from the Kansas City International Airport.

Essential Functions

  • Teach Concert Band, Wind Ensemble, Jazz Ensemble, Percussion Ensemble, conducting, brass and percussion methods, plus applied lessons in brass and percussion.
  • Coordinate with the Athletic Department’s pep band program.
  • Collaborate with music faculty to refine budgeting processes and updates to our music education curriculum.

Requirements

  • A completed doctorate in music is preferred. ABD considered.
  • Candidates must have record of successful classroom teaching at K-12 and college levels.
