Director of Counseling Services

Position Summary

The Director of Counseling Services oversees the delivery of counseling services to individual students and groups and provides vision, direction, and supervision for Counseling Center staff, operations, facilities, budgets, policies, and initiatives. The Director manages the operations of the Counseling Center, as well as provide direct clinical service. In addition, the Director of Counseling Services collaborates with various internal and external personnel and supports the broader Student Life vision of promoting community within the Catholic and Benedictine tradition.

Essential Functions

  • Provide strategic direction for counseling services; set and achieve long-term and short-term goals that foster Benedictine College’s mission and vision; serve as the College resource for best practices related to student counseling services.
  • Administer counseling services in accord with Catholic moral principles, Benedictine College principles and policies, licensing and professional standards and ethics, and governmental regulations including HIPAA, FERPA, and Title IX; establish and enforce policies and procedures.
  • Manage student intake/scheduling procedures; manage department within allocated budget; identify and manage risks associated with counseling services.
  • Select, train, and supervise counseling staff; review and assign new counseling cases to staff.
  • Provide mental health counseling, assessment, diagnosis, treatment, referral and consultations for students, including in crisis/emergency situations.
  • Collaborate with Director of Student Health in management of the Student Health Center.
  • Coordinate and/or collaborate with others to provide regular programs of student and staff education and training on wellness topics including mental health, alcohol and other drug prevention, and Title IX/Ravens CARE.
  • Develop and maintain effective and collaborative working relationships with Residence Life, Student Success Center, Nursing, Athletics, local health providers and resources, other college departments, and the college administration.
  • Provide annual/semester reports of Counseling Center activities to Vice President of Student Life

Position Qualifications

  • Understanding and acceptance of Catholic and Benedictine values
  • Clinical counselor or social work skills
  • Supervision skills
  • Strong experience in crisis intervention and risk-assessments.
  • Ability to create and conduct presentations for staff and students
  • Ability to provide consultation to faculty, staff, and others on matters relating to student problems
  • Ability to manage crisis and conflict situations
  • Excellent oral, written and interpersonal skills as well as proven administrative and organizational skills
  • Computer skills including word processing, e-mail and database software

Education

  • Master’s degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, social work or related field with current licensure

Experience

  • Minimum of five years of experience as a licensed counselor, preferably in a college setting
  • Leadership and supervisory experience, preferably in a college setting
