A Message from President Minnis on Plans to Open in the Fall

Sent to Benedictine College students, parents, faculty, staff and alumni on May 6, 2020.

Dear Raven Community –

The coronavirus pandemic has certainly turned the world upside down. We are doing things we would never have considered in the past and the future seems unclear. The second half of the semester has been completely disrupted and many traditions have either gone online or been cancelled or postponed. This has led to a lot of questions about the fall and the start of our next semester.

Although it seems odd to announce that we will open for the fall, I want to make it clear that we are planning to open on time in August, with students in the classrooms, vibrant student life and ministry programs, and athletics. All these things are important to creating the community, faith and scholarship that are the foundation of our Benedictine education. And while we have done our best with virtual events, community, faith and scholarship are difficult to sustain on an empty campus.

Our students are the lifeblood of the college. Without them, we are incomplete. The campus is beautiful, but it is just land and buildings. Students fill them with joy, enthusiasm for life, and excitement for the future. So, we will do everything in our power to bring them back in the fall with the best experience possible.

Of course, we will take responsible and prudent steps to ensure the safety of our community. We do not know what realities we will face, but we need to be prepared for the fact that things will be different in the fall. College administrators, along with faculty and staff on the Coronavirus Response Task Force, have already been formulating a Raven Safety plan that will allow us to open with in-person instruction, programming and athletics while still protecting the health and well-being of our faculty, staff, students and the entire community.

We continue to do our part in fighting the pandemic and to help us, I once again turn to prayer. I am calling on a new Memorare Army, 2,020 for 2020, asking those who sign up to pray 2,020 Memorares by the end of 2020 for the end of the pandemic, the health of our students, a successful opening in the fall, and continued strength in enrollment. Combined with our hard work and preparation, all these prayers can give us hope for a return to normalcy.

Yes, these have been difficult times, but we must remember we are Ravens. We have faced tough things in the past. And we will face tough things in the future. But it has always been the mission of community, faith and scholarship that has brought us through.

We will get through this; we will prevail; we will be stronger; we will rise.

Because after all…we are Ravens.

And once a Raven…Always a Raven.
