President Minnis Announces a New Schedule for the Fall

To Benedictine College students, parents, employees, alumni and friends on June 3, 2020.
Edited June 10, 2020.

Dear Raven Family,

On May 5 at our Virtual Honors Convocation, I announced that Benedictine College would return in the fall with students in the classroom, vibrant student life and ministry programs, and athletics. Since then, many people within the college community have been engaged in working through the specifics of how we will do that. As those plans are continuing to be finalized, one thing we need to let you know about right now is the decision to shift the semester forward.

As one way to mitigate any spread of the coronavirus, for this fall, we will begin the semester one week early. Here is a quick list of important dates for Fall 2020:

  • August 8

    Move-In Day #1

    10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. Freshman in the Honors Program, transfer and returning student-athletes in Football, Men's & Women's Soccer and Volleyball

  • August 12

    Move-In Day #2

    New International Students

  • August 14

    Move-In Day #3

9:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. Freshman student-athletes in Football, Men's & Women's Soccer and Volleyball, plus all participants in Marching Band, Cheer, Dance and Cross Country

  • August 15

    Move-In Day #4

    9:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. All other new students, including non-athlete transfer students

  • August 16

    Move-In Day #5

    All other returning students

  • August 19

    First Day of Classes

  • August 25

    Opening All-School Mass and Convocation

  • September 25-26

    Family Weekend

  • October 17

    Homecoming

  • October 22-25

    No Fall Break

  • November 24

    Last Day of Classes

  • November 30 - December 4

    Final Exams (taken online off-campus)

There will still be a ROC Week for incoming freshmen and our student leaders are working on how to safely implement that. Family Weekend and Homecoming will maintain their established dates. You can see the entire list of key dates for the next academic year here.

You will notice above that we plan to skip Fall Break and continue all the way through to Thanksgiving. This was an idea suggested by our student leaders and we appreciate their input in this process. The thought here is to keep everyone safely on campus and not do Fall Mission Trips or any other traveling in October. While this does reduce the chance of anyone bringing the virus back to campus, it also makes it tough on students, faculty and staff who will have to push through the whole semester without a break. We will all need to recognize the added stress and be understanding and helpful in this timeframe.

The last day of in-person classes will then be November 24, 2020, the Tuesday before Thanksgiving. Everyone will remain home after Thanksgiving and finals will be online November 30 to December 4, 2020. We would then return for the Spring Semester with the first day of classes set for January 13, 2021.

Classes and events will continue while meeting all local, state and federal guidelines and in the coming weeks the college will unveil a full Raven Safety Plan with specifics of how classes, athletics, events, meals and other things will be handled for this year.

We are moving forward with common sense and courage. We are working with state and local officials, medical professionals, athletic conferences and our own personnel to be able to offer a true Benedictine College experience for our students, while still ensuring the health and well-being of our community.

We are hopeful for the future and look forward to this fall as Ravens Will Rise!

Forward. Always Forward,

Stephen D. Minnis
President, Benedictine College
