Opportunities & Resources

Outside of the classroom, there are a number of ways that students in the Department of Art & Design are encouraged to engage with their interests and the community.

The Artist Forum

The Artist Forum is a student organization dedicated to exploring art outside the classroom.  They host events throughout the year that vary from work nights in the studio to movies to art sales. While membership is not required, most art students get involved and participate while studying at BC.

Service Learning

The department believes that artists should play a role in the communities in which they live.  As such, students have multiple opportunities while completing their coursework to engage with the community in mutually-beneficial projects.

Discovery Program

Interdisciplinary discovery projects give students the opportunity to explore special topics outside of the classroom. The department participates in an annual Art Sale benefitting both students and the department, the findings of which are presented during the Annual Discovery Day Symposium.

In the past few years, faculty in the Department of Art & Design have sponsored a wide range of projects, including:

  • Papermaking
  • The Philosophy and Art of Dada
  • What does it mean to be a Graphic Designer?
  • Building a waste oil furnace for melting metal
  • Researching the art collection of Mount St. Scholastica Monastery
